◆ 1980년대(정확한 연도가 기억이...?) 초에 TV에서 방영되던 '제8 전투비행대'라는 외화 시리즈가 있었습니다. 비슷한 시기의 '전투 (Combat)'과 함께 2차대전물로서 인기를 끌었던 시리즈였습니다. foxmouse도 초등학교 3-4학년때 본기억밖에는 안납니다. 주인공이 F4U 콜세어라서... 문구점에서 이 콜세어의 1/72 모형을 사다가 만들어서 가지고 놀았던 기억이 나네요. 마침 skellen님께서 이 시리즈에 대해 보내주신 내용이 있어 올려봅니다. 자료찾고 정리하느라 애쓰신 skellen님 정말 감사합니다. 이 시리즈를 다시 한번 볼 기회가 있었으면 좋겠네요. 그럼 skellen님의 제 8 전투비행대에 관한 자료를 읽어볼까요?
"제8전투비행대"의 부활을 일으키려고, 하다가 엄청난 사실에 부딫쳤죠. 3일정도 자료 수집을 하다가,짧은 영어로 자료 번역 다하고... 했는데, 원인은 고공출격의 심봉택님의 홈피에 벌써 그 자료를 다뤘더군요. 세상에 그 사실을 나중에야 알았습니다. 너무나 자세히 그 사실을 다뤄서 증말 괴로웠습니다. 뭔가 컨셉이 완성되는듯한 느낌이 들더니... 와르르( 이스캘런은 불하~와 고공~이 다루지 않는 컨셉을 찿기가 이렇게 힘드는지는 이제야 알았습니다..)

고공출격에서 심봉택님이 다룬 검은양비행단의 사실이 "제8전투비행대"의 원조가 맞습니다. 심봉택님은 추측으로 그걸 표현 했더군요. 그레고리 보잉톤의 자서전도 아마존에서 신청하고, 그사람의 쓸쓸한 말년도 웹상에 다 있더군요. 그리고 중요한것은 1976~77, 78년 봄까지 미국의 NBC방송국에서 37편에 걸친 시리즈로 제작 되었습니다. 그 시리즈가 77년도 쯤인가 MBC-TV에서 방영을 했구요.(이 스캘런 엠비씨에 방송국에 그 프로에 대한 문의를 했는데 아직 답이 없습니다. 또 그 자초지종은 이렇습니다. 25년이나 지난 옛날 외화를 단지 제8전투비행대라는 제목으로 자료을 찿을려니 없더군요. 그런데 영화를 좋아하는 관계로 로버트콘라드라는 배우를 알고는 있었죠... 오직 단서는 로버트 콘라드 이름 하나로 그 자료를 검색하기 시작했죠. 결과는 성공. 출연작중에 Baa Baa Black Sheep이라는 76년작 티비작품이 있었죠. 링크데이타를 추적해보니, 그레고리 보잉톤과 연결이 되더군요. 그 사람이 자서전을 썼는데 그제목이 Baa Baa Black Sheep이라는 겁니다. 바로 그 자서전을 아마존에서 신청하고 그사람의 일대기 프로필을 읽어봤죠. 솔로몬전선에서 격추당하고 거의 20개월동안 포로 생활하면서 고생을 엄청 했더군요. 거의 말년의 어두운 표정은 포로생활의 지독함 때문이었답니다...

그레고리 보잉톤이 1988년 암으로 죽기까지, 많은 생활의 어려움을 격으면서 사라졌더군요. 4번의 결혼, 재정적 파탄, 알콜중독, 어린시절 이혼한 부모 밑에서의 생활... 그러나 최초6살에 곡예비행단의 비행기를 조종사를 구슬려(?)탑니다. 약관 6살에(얼마나 비행에 열정이 많았으면..)1926년 워싱턴대학에 입학하면서 졸업전 첫번째 부인인 헬렌과 결혼을 하고 결혼10개월만에 아들 그레고리 클락보잉톤이 태어납니다.. 아마도 괄괄한 성격이 아니었나 생각이 드는군요. 레슬링으로서 인정을 주위에 받습니다. 그리고 워싱턴대학 ROTC를 거쳐서 졸업하는 시기가 1934년입니다. 보잉톤은 Marine Corps에서 정식 조종사 트래이닝을 받기 시작하죠. 거기서 미래의 콰타과날에서의 영웅들인 Bob Galer, Richard Mangrum을 만나죠. 88-C, NY-2기등 다양한 비행기로 트래이닝이 계속 됩니다. 그 와중에 술에 빠집니다. 그리고 아내와의 이혼... 그리고 1941년 플라잉타이거즈에 지원, 많은 전적을 세우죠.

그리고 솔로몬섬에서의 근무 여기서 그레고리의 사생아 비행단이 만들어집니다. 나중에 검은양비행단으로 바뀌지만.. 이하는 심봉택 홈피의 내용과 같읍니다. 솔로몬제도에서의 1944년 1월 3일 격추후 약20개월정도의 포로 생활로 초췌해진 보잉톤은 헨리트루먼에게서 1945년 Medal of Honor을 받습니다.(이사진이 CFS2메뉴얼 202쪽에 실려 있습니다. 세상에 그걸 아직도 몰랐다니..)
다시 술을 찿는 보잉톤은 1958년 자서전을 내기까지 두세번의 결혼을 더하죠. 그리고 자서전(Baa Baa Black Sheep)이 나오자 명성을 얻게 됩니다. 그리고 1976년 NBC와 손잡고 제8전투비행대(Baa Baa Black Sheep)을 제작하게 되죠. 그명성으로 다시금 많은 수입과 4번째 아내를 얻습니다. 그러나 명성뒤에는 엄청난 비난이 전우들에게서 받습니다.

실제로 자서전에서 검은양비행단의 묘사를 "a collection of misfits and screwballs"로 해서 비난을 받은겁니다. 심지어 제8전투비행대 제작 컨셉자체도 배우들연기를 이렇게 몰고가죠.(티비에서 기억이 어슴푸레 나는군요) 비행단 동료들에게서 집중적인 비난을 받죠. 보잉톤이 명성을 얻는 도중에 비행단의 에이스 Frank Walton과도 사이가 크게 벌어지는 말년을 보내죠. 그 때 그프로그램이 우리 한국에 수입되어서 엠비씨에서 방영을 하게 되었죠.

그때 돌이켜보면, 아니 어떻게 TV수준에서 실제 비행기를 동원해서 콜세어와 제로기를 공중전을 찍을수 있었는지.. 아직도 굉장하다는 생각뿐입니다. 영화수준도 아니고, 티비인데... 그때 촬영한 비행기들은 5대의 Corsairs, DC-3/C-47, 제로기 몇대, Texan 이렇게 사용되었다는군요.
우리 불하를 찿는 분들께, 제8전투비행대 메인테마 웨이브파일과 약간의 사진을 메일로 보내드립니다. 모든 분들께 음악도 들려드리고 싶군요. 불하의 메인테마로 사용하셔도 전혀 손색이 없습니다. 실은 이 스캘런 홈피를 만들면 오프닝테마로 사용할려고 했는데... 흑흑T_T(모든게 와르르..)-이 Wav파일을 우연히 찿게 되었는데, 계속 그 쪽서버가 다운되더군요. 600K정도밖에 되질 않는데... 다른 홈피에서는 이테마파일이 없어요. 모두다 80년대 티비시리즈만 있고.. 유독 그 홈피만 있었는데, 저는 못받는줄 알았습니다.

이하는 한국에서 방영되었는지는 너무오래되어서(25년) 알수없지만, 미국기록에 따른 37편 시리즈의 주요 에피소드 제목과 내용입니다. 좋은 자료가 되길 바랍니다.. Cast중 Marines & Others는 실제 검은양비행단 캐릭터가 있었는가 봅니다. 그리고 Nurses의 캐릭터는 fiction이랍니다.(이야기를 재밋게 하기 위해서..) 아~ 이시리즈를 올칼라로 엠비씨에서 다시 해주면 좋으련만...
그리고 마지막으로 사족을 달자면, 이제는 이스켈런 홈피만들면 그 아이템이 이미 철지난 자룐지 확실히 조사하고 뛰어들어야 될것 같습니다.(그래서 논문쓸때 논문리스트를 찿는가 봅니다.)

missionaries, and orphans--and in 24 hours,
the Marines plan to invade the island.

arrive to ferry bombers, they demand to fly combat
missions and to remain off-limits to the Black Sheep.

24. 22 Mar 77 The Fastest Gun - The Japanese ace, Col. Harachi,
catches Boyington when his Corsair is acting up, and challenges him to single
combat, "tomorrow afternoon at three o'clock over The Slot." At least this
episode features some flying scenes. But so much was out of whack. A
challenge to a duel over The Slot? Come on. Nothing a fighter pilot liked
better than to catch an enemy plane alone or with engine trouble.
At one point, Pappy radios up "The Slot isn't big enough for the both of us."
The Slot is only about 400 miles long. Meeting "over the Slot at 3 o'clock"
is about as specific as "meeting over California."
And the nurses! Wow! In the middle of the show, half a dozen knock-out nurses
invite the guys to come and help them polish off a keg of beer. Sure!
One neat part of this episode is a brief appearance by the real Pappy
Boyington, as a Marine Corps general pinning a medal on ... himself.

The Japanese are determined to bomb an American ammo dump,
misplaced on "Vella La Cava," VMF-214's base island. A
padre who's seen too many horrors has to try to snap Bob
Anderson out of his funk.

needed repair work to the airstrip, Pappy promises
some hostile Seabees front-row seats at a girl-packed
U.S.O. show. But when the U.S.O. troupe gets sick,
the Seabees refuse to work, until "Pappy's
Lambs" do their part.
36. 30 Mar 78 Sheep in the Limelight - Pappy and his fighter pilots
unknowingly save the touring Eleanor Roosevelt's
transport from enemy attack, then get hero treatment
that courts disaster.

guest-stars as a British Coastwatcher.
